If You're Still Using Facebook Like It’s 2016… We Need to Talk

How platforms (and people) have changed—and what to do instead

Let’s throw it back for a sec.

Remember when posting a simple photo of your shop’s chalkboard sign could reach thousands of people on Facebook overnight? No ad budget. No algorithm drama. Just a cozy caption and boom—your community showed up.

Well… things are different now.

Facebook has changed.
Your audience has changed.
And the way we use social media to connect? That’s shifted too.

What’s Not Hitting Anymore

If your posts are feeling a little quiet lately—you’re not doing anything wrong. You’re just using a 2016 strategy on a 2025 platform.

Here’s what’s shifted:

  • People want connection, not just updates

  • The algorithm favors conversation, not canned announcements

  • Static posts with zero context? They’re getting scrolled right past

Today, it’s less about what you post, and more about how it makes someone feel.

What Still Works (and Always Will)

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to go viral.

Your community doesn’t need perfect graphics or trending audio.
They need to hear your voice. They need to feel something real.

Here’s what I’ve seen work time and time again:

  • Posts that feel like real-life conversations

  • Stories that reflect what your audience is experiencing

  • Questions that invite them in (and are easy to answer!)

  • Content that shows what you believe in—not just what you sell

So What Can You Do Differently?

If you’re ready to shift your Facebook content into 2025 (without losing your voice), try these simple swaps:

1. Talk to one person

Forget the formal announcements. Just speak from the heart. Imagine writing to a regular who pops in every Friday—you know the one.

2. Bring people behind the scenes

Your audience wants to know the “why” behind your business. Show the prep, the messy middle, the proud moments.

3. Ask easier questions

Think: “Which local café has the best coffee?” vs. “How are you managing your business goals this quarter?” 😉

4. Repurpose what you already have

That blog post? Break it down into a carousel. That quote you shared on IG? Pop it on a Pin. You don’t have to create more—you just need to share it in the right way.

5. Use visuals that feel like your brand

Skip the stock photos. Use a quick snap of your team, your workspace, your handwritten to-do list. People connect faster with what’s real, not what’s perfect.

A Little Nudge

If you’re reading this and thinking, “This sounds like what I want to be doing—but I’m not sure how to start,” that’s okay.

Helping small-town businesses show up online with heart is what I do. You don’t need to be flashy or perfect. You just need a strategy that actually fits you.

Let’s talk about what that could look like—no pressure, just possibilities.
